When to Schedule My Newborn Photography Session

The best time for newborn photos is usually within the first two weeks after the baby is born. This window allows for capturing those precious early moments when newborns are generally sleepier and easier to pose. This does not mean you can’t get beautiful images of your baby after 14 days. My sleepiest baby photograph so far was a premie who was almost a month old, while one of the most awake babies I ever had was just a few days old. Babies are not as flexible at this point, but swaddled images and awake images work well at this stage.

It is best to book your session in advance. I will pencil in your due date and make sure to have availability as soon as you are ready to schedule. I still try to get in last minute bookings, but cannot guarantee availability. It is best to get on the calendar by your second trimester. Then, contact me once baby is born to get a firm date and time on the calendar.

Here are some bonus tips to ensure your newborn photography session goes smoothly:

  • Choose the right time of day: Newborns tend to be sleepier and more cooperative in the morning.
  • Start with a full belly: It’s best to feed your baby before the session begins. Your photographer may suggest feeding before arrival or allocate time upon arrival to ensure your baby is well-fed, comfortable, and sleepy for the session.
  • Bring a pacifier: Even if your baby isn’t hungry, a pacifier can provide comfort and help soothe them during the session. Sucking is a natural instinct for newborns and can help them relax while being gently posed for photos. If you are not doing a pacifier, your photographer should understand and n to try to force that!
  • Dress lightly: The studio will be warm to keep your baby cozy and to prevent them from getting cold while unclothed. However, this warmth can be uncomfortable, especially for new moms. Wear light clothing to stay comfortable during the session.
  • Stay relaxed: Babies can sense your energy, so it’s important to stay calm and relaxed during the session. Come to the studio ready to enjoy watching your newborn being posed and photographed – it’s a special moment to cherish!
  • Communicate with your photographer: Share your preferences, concerns, and any special requests with your photographer before the session begins. Clear communication will help ensure that you’re both on the same page and that your vision is realized.
